Picchio, out of work and awaiting severance pay, momentarily leaves the world of the avant-garde and takes refuge in Villa Serena, a hospice for elderly artists run by an impish Director, known as “the Captain.” Closer to dusk than dawn, but not quite tame, Ugo feels the graveyard atmosphere that reigns in the hospice weighing heavy, not nullified by meeting old acquaintances such as his former flame, the soubrette Lucy, or his friend Augustarello. Little by little the mature comedian attaches himself to 18-year-old waitress Renata who, out of simplicity or curiosity or weariness of the environment, ends up accepting his friendship. When the seven million liquidation money arrives, the girl and her pathetic companion travel to Milan, Rome and even Capri. But as soon as the nest egg runs out, the sentimental and paradoxical relationship fades. When Ugo introduces Renata to the private TV station “Sette Colli” with the hope of a double engagement, the young woman is won over by Emilio, one of the executives. Ugo, in despair, ends up in the neuro for several weeks. When he gets out, he casually meets Renata, now established, but rejects her grateful gesture. This time, with much less prosopopoeia, he will reappear at Villa Serena.
