Adua and Her Friends: The lunch

The movie is set in Rome and surroundings. In the movie clip Piero (Marcello Mastroianni) comes to Adua (Simone Signoret), Lolita (Sandra Milo), Marilina (Emmanuelle Riva) and Caterina, known as Milly (Gina Rovere) in a farmhouse on the Appia Antica, where the women hope to open a restaurant. The Appian Way - Rome's gateway to the East - was Europe's first superhighway and the wonder of its day. Built in 312 BC, it connected Rome with Capua (near Naples), running in a straight line for most of the way. Eventually it stretched 400 miles to Brindisi, from where Roman ships sailed to Greece and Egypt. About the first 10 miles of the Appian Way are preserved as a Regional Park, The Appian Way Regional Park. In addition to the roadway, there are ruined Roman monuments, two major Christian catacombs, and a church marking the spot where Peter had a vision of Jesus.

Plot:
After the closure of a dating house, Adua, Milly, Lolita and Marilina decide to open an out-of-town trattoria: they will thus create honest work for themselves, which will serve to mask the equivocal business they are used to. They have the non-disinterested help of a certain Ercoli, who facilitates the paperwork for the business license, but imposes his own conditions. In the first few months, the women must have a blameless demeanor so as not to arouse suspicion; then they resume business as usual and share the proceeds with the patron. For Adua and her companions, a new life begins: they learn about the work and gain an unknown serenity of mind from it. The inn prospers and the women are given the prospect of possible reintegration into society. When Ercoli shows up, the four friends refuse to execute the pacts and kick him out. But the exploiter immediately retaliates and succeeds in shutting down the inn. Adua and the companions look for someone to help them, but everyone retreats and abandons them to their fate.
