Chronicle of Poor Lovers: childhood
The story is set in Florence between 1925 and 1926 and the main characters of the novel are the inhabitants, mostly proletarians, of Via del Corno, located between the Palazzo Vecchio and Santa Croce, the same street in which the author had spent some years of his youth. The voice-over that tells the childhood and habits of Mario, speaks and describes Via del Corno, the street of city’s historical centre.

Plot:
Based on a novel by Vasco Pratolini. We are in Florence in the early years of fascism: Mario is engaged to Bianca and meets some anti-fascists. One of these, Campolmi, is beaten up by the squadracce. Mario, visiting him, gets to know his wife and falls in love with her. Campolmi dies; Mario, who has broken up with his fiancée, would get a free pass but out of respect for the dead man renounces. Meanwhile, he has compromised himself politically and one day the fascists take him away.A great classic by Carlo Lizzani with Marcello Mastroianni: 1925, Florence.
