Plot:
Tommaso and his wife Matilde earn their living on the streets of Naples. The woman is pregnant with their firstborn son but, due to a complicated delivery, the infant dies. In the same hospital a young woman, abandoned by her partner, dies in giving birth to a beautiful baby boy. With the complicity of the midwife, Tommaso replaces the dead infant with the living one, whom they name Feliciello. Matilde, too, dies of an incurable disease a few years later, and Feliciello grows up surrounded by the care of Tommaso, who makes all sorts of sacrifices so that he does not lack anything. But one day the birth father comes forward and claims his son. Despair and rebellion are to no avail. Facing the judge's order, the boy will have to be returned to his real father.
