Plot:
Based on a novel by Vasco Pratolini. We are in Florence in the early years of fascism: Mario is engaged to Bianca and meets some anti-fascists. One of these, Campolmi, is beaten up by the squadracce. Mario, visiting him, gets to know his wife and falls in love with her. Campolmi dies; Mario, who has broken up with his fiancée, would get a free pass but out of respect for the dead man renounces. Meanwhile, he has compromised himself politically and one day the fascists take him away.
