PLOT
Upon the death of his father-the wine industrialist Libero Fornaciari, separated for 30 years from his wife, united more uxorio with a company employee and president of the soccer team in Borgorosso, a village in Romagna-his son Benito, a diligent employee at the Vatican, inherited, in addition to his property, the burden of directing and subsidizing the team, for which his parent had lavished emotion and money. Benito begrudgingly accepted the presidency of the Football Club and, invited to the first game of his life, turned away after the first half. Soon, however, while still remaining incompetent, he devoted himself heart and soul to the team: he spent millions on new players and drafted a South American soccer “wizard.” When Borgorosso, in spite of everything, loses one game after another, fired the “magician,” Benito becomes coach, leading the soccer team to success. But a disqualification of the field, for which he is responsible, causes an uprising in the town--composed entirely of ardent fans--so he is forced to resign. At the last moment, however, inspired by his father's example, Benito has a stroke of genius: he buys a great player, Omar Sivori. Reversing the situation in his favor, Benito returns, acclaimed, to preside over the Borgorosso Football Club.
