PLOT
Guido Tersilli, a young doctor who has just graduated, realizing that freelancing does not grant, at least in the beginning, the economic peace of mind to which he aspires, decides to achieve his goal by grabbing clients from among the huge plethora of mutuals. The beginnings, however, are rather discouraging. Finally, the big break: Dr. Bui, who “owns” something like two thousand three hundred mutuals, is dying. Overruling his colleagues, anxious as he is, to throw himself on that good fortune, the new doctor manages, by wooing the dying man's wife and, with the vague promise to marry her, to become, so to speak, the sole “heir” to the “estate.” When Bui dies, our Guido, abandons the widow and marries the daughter of a wealthy builder. Meanwhile, the borrowers grow, while the minutes set aside for each visit decrease. Overcome by a collapse, Tersilli ends up in the hospital: the same one that had seen him, early in his career, as a volunteer assistant. Over him stretch, greedy, the faces of his old colleagues aiming at his mutually beneficial patients. Terrified at the prospect of losing, with these, his life as well, Guido gets up and returns to his “gold mine”: but from now on, to not get sick, he will treat his patients by telephone.
