PLOT:
After a few years of marriage, the writer Giovanni Pontano and his wife Lidia realize that their love has now ended in the grayness of boredom and an ever-increasing lack of communication. The narrative begins with the visit that the two spouses pay to Tommaso, a close friend of theirs, also a writer, who spends the last hours of his life in a luxurious clinic. The painful vision of the dying man pushes Giovanni to search for any distraction while Lidia, as if devoid of all feelings, wanders aimlessly in the sunny and deserted city. In the evening, after a bored visit to a nightclub, the two reach the sumptuous villa of an industrialist who is offering Giovanni a profitable job. Giovanni takes his time. He reaches the guest's daughter, who is bored in her almost pathetic solitude, and woos her. Lidia, in turn, accepts the attentions of another guest with indifference, but decisively withdraws when he becomes more pressing. During the party the news of Tommaso's death arrives and dawn surprises Lidia and Giovanni next to each other, even more sad and disillusioned.
