The film opens on the beautiful view of the village of Roccantica, province of Rieti, in the Lazio region. The village was used as the main location of the film, as it is there that Romolo (Orlando) and his wife (Ekberg) reside. The house where the couple live is in Via del Campanile.

Plot:
Romolo works as a gas station attendant at the petrol station owned by his wife Ines, who comes from a wealthy family. One day he meets Orazio, a former comrade-in-arms, who convinces him to leave his wife and take up a life of expediency. The two men start travelling around the Peninsula and during their wanderings make the acquaintance of the beautiful Candida, who becomes a permanent member of the company. Following indigestion as a result of a bet, Romolo is left for dead by his friend, who communicates the news to his wife... but the latter is in fact still alive and well, triggering a series of misunderstandings.
