L'ultimo sapore dell'aria: in the countryside
The country house where Marco (Diberti), Diego (Lupo) and Claudia (Galeazzi) spend a peaceful time to forget Diego’s illness is set near Tolfa (Rome), precisely in the Borgo di Rota. This is a very small village, more or less a dozen buildings, with the church detached and isolated. The road that leads from the warehouse (recognizable by the iron doors) to the church, flanked by stone houses, has often been used in movies, although the most frequently framed point is between the two rows of houses, ending with the arch.

Plot:
Diego Micheli; a sixteen-year-old boy who is tormented at school and misunderstood in his family, where Mrs. Maria has to neglect him to devote herself to his half-brothers and stepfather, runs away from home and, after an unhappy experience at a garage, finds work at the 'Sporting Club'. Passionate about swimming, Diego tries to do by himself at night those exercises that he sees his pupils do during the day. While caretaker Giovanni grumbles about Diego's lack of help, coach Marco takes an interest in the young man to the point of becoming a sincere friend and a sensible father. Put on the team, Micheli beats the previous champion, a cocky Lori; but he suddenly falls ill. The doctors diagnose a fatal illness. Marco and his daughter Carla do their best to care for what has become the third member of the family. Having won the junior championships, Diego should take part in the European championships of his category in Amsterdam. Marco realises that the boy is the last thing he can enjoy in a life that eludes him; he trains him in the country; he takes him to Holland. Diego, during the 400 m race, sets the European record in the 200 m; he then collapses and arrives dying at the end of the race...
